Tips for short cuts on accelerated career paths
1. Target high turnover Industries
2. Target unpopular industries
3. Target high dropout industries (mainly women dominated industries due to motherhood)
4. Target industries where your sex, race, colour are an advantage
5. Target boom and innovative industries, not ones in boom, but those starting to boom
6. Target small companies that are in growth areas
Point 1: How to Excel in getting a job.
1. Target Managers in a company at the top not the bottom, who are the real decision makers?
2. Approach them direct, they have influence, via Linkedin, in person, socially, at coffee shops local to their
office. People employee first those people they know and like, so get to know them.
3. Go via the company website,
4. If you are going to use the internet get specific with websites you use, or use trade magazines
5. If use internet, regurgitate the advert, that is what they are looking for!
6. Jump ahead of the queue, beat the internet, go in person.
7. Research the company, people employ people who want to work for them. Know their company
Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Market yourself: No one will notice you unless you put the effort in, here then are 9 unique ways you can score a job interview, based on my experiences in advertising and marketing. Try one or try them all, but do not use all 9 on the same employer.
1. Use Social Media to Your Advantage
If you’re not using Twitter, Facebook, or other social media outlets, you’re missing out on a great way to begin conversations with potential employers. These are the ways we all communicate, and they can be very effective in drawing attention to you. Start following the Twitter feeds of people you want to work for. Make insightful comments. Post links to articles you have written or pieces of work you have done. Become vocal in the social media world, and do it consistently. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner), you’ll get the attention of someone who counts, and then when a job is posted, you can jump right in and let your Twitter or Facebook community know you’re looking.
2. Create Your Own Direct Mail Campaign
A lot of people in advertising, design, or marketing use this trick, but there’s no reason it cannot apply to you if you work in another field. A traditional resume emailed to an HR department will not stand out. But why not create something different and unique to your skill set that will help you get noticed? If you’re an accountant, send your resume in a package with chocolate coins. If you’re in the catering business, write out your resume on a cloth napkin, and send it in a napkin ring with your email address on it. There are always ways to stand out while being smart and doing something related to your profession. Creative resumes are not just for creatives. And don’t do a one-off, either. Follow it up with something just as creative. Attach a kit Kat “Take a break and read a great resume”
3. Follow in the Footsteps of Upcoming Bands:
When a band is trying to make it big (or just getting people to turn up to shows), they don’t have the money for big advertising campaigns. They don’t even have the money for small ones. But they want you to show up in droves, so they get creative. They cover walls with wheat-paste posters, they set up websites with music samples, and do whatever they can to spread the word. You can do the same. If you’re in a creative field, be it advertising, art, design, baking, or anything else with a visual aspect, a website is a great way to get your work out there.
4. Do a Public Relations Stunt:
These stunts are often a great way for ad agencies to stretch the budgets of their clients. Buying media space in a newspaper, in a magazine, or on TV costs a lot of money. But if you can do a stunt that gets coverage, you can get massive exposure on a minimal budget. Think of a way to get yourself noticed that is relevant to your career path. For instance, take your design skills to the street and draw a giant, illustrated chalk resume outside of the building of a future employer. Who wouldn’t notice that? It could even get news coverage. Remember, with the advent of 24-hour news, channels are always looking for stories. Do the easy part for them. Let them know where you’ll be and why you’re doing it. You could even spend some money buying your very own billboard. Of course, that takes a lot of money, but it may just pay off.
5. Ask for a Tour of the Building Does the place you’d like to work at have a nice building? Is it a manufacturing plant with interesting equipment? Does it have historical significance? Is it well designed, or has it been engineered to be very green? Is it none of the above? It doesn’t really matter. There are always ways to get tours; you just have to find the right angle. Ask to write a story on the company for a School project, for your or your child.
6. Write an Article about the Prospective Employer
You don’t need to be a big-name journalist to do this. With the Internet, blogs, regional newspapers, and so many other avenues for content, you can easily find a way to write an article and get it published.
7. Create Something That Goes Viral
YouTube is wonderful for many reasons, one being that you don’t have to have money or power to become popular. Videos go viral, and when they do, millions of people see them.
8. Advertise Yourself Online. The Internet is full of ways to advertise. And it doesn’t take a whole lot of money, either. Sites like Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn all offer ad spaces, and if you’re smart, you can create ads that will get you noticed.
9. Put Your Resume on Video. While it’s not applicable to everyone, a video resume sent on a flash drive or DVD may just be the edge you need to stand out and score an interview.
What are some creative ways to get a job?
I read about this one guy who got a job designing Lego sets… what he did was just to build a zillion things with legos, and he would build miniature buildings and statues and bridges with legos in his own house and hometown. He published them online… and eventually Lego discovered him and gave him a job.
I hired a girl once who put some quotations on her resume. She had quotations from co-workers about how cool she was. I liked it, and I hired her.
You can do things a creative way… you can dress differently, colour your resume differently, or try sending a thank you note to a potential employer in the form of a crossword puzzle. You can go on a website that you love and start thinking up ideas for them… send them the ideas and see if you can catch their attention. You can be creative in listing how your skills and experience match what they are looking for.
Point 2: How to excel when you are in a job – Therefore get more money and promotion
Mark 7:37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said.
Understand that anyone senior to you must be able to justify your raise to someone higher. Therefore, whining or pleading won’t work (not for long). And if your boss is the owner of the company, he or she will be the hardest person to convince – they know that every penny counts. You do a great job, but you’ve previously been underpaid? Tough, it’s too late to moan now. You lost that fight when you signed up for the job.
I’m serious! You’ve already been pigeonholed and to get the pay you deserve you are going to have to show you can fly – either for the company, or if you must then away from the company.
Here are my ten top tips on increasing your salary.
1. Believe you’re worth more money: The most important step. Sounds very self-help-ish, but it’s true. You need to radiate a belief that you’re a higher earner, and you need to believe it. If you do, more responsibility will come towards you, which is the key to earning more. If you do not know why you are worth more money they will not.
2. Know what your job is: When I’ve employed someone, I’ve had a very clear idea what they critically need to achieve. They may do other stuff, it may be great, but if they’re not doing what I’m wanting then they are underperforming. Companies can be bad at communicating this stuff. Find out what your job really is, and then make sure you’re doing it. (Hint: your job is not to sit in front of a PC every day. That’s a side effect).
3. When at work, live and breathe for your boss: Forget yourself for a moment. Think hard about how to improve the daily working life of whoever decides your salary, and then improve it. I don’t mean sucking up, I mean making their work more effective. This works! Pay rises are given to those people bosses value and make their life easier, are you in the category of “people they would hate to do without or loose”. Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters
4. Do the dirty work: Is there a role you’d like and/or you’d be good at, that’s vital, and that nobody wants? Take it – or make it up and then take it. Sales is a good example; most people don’t want to sell, and selling ultimately makes the money. Or being the guy who manages their website.
5. Find out what you’re really worth: Don’t daydream or get bitter over a fantasy. Cautiously shop around to discover your going rate. Fact: big raises come when you move. But you don’t want to issue an ultimatum or appear disloyal, if the aim is to keep and improve your current position. You just want to show you’re ready for more, and to be equipped with the facts to set your targets. (If you discover you’re not actually worth more, take emergency action!) Look up your salary on line,( http://www.worldsalaries.org/usa.shtml) ask a recruiter, look at what jobs are being advertised at.
6. Follow the money, if you can: If your work isn’t a vocation, then try to align your role with profit centres (sales or product delivery) rather than costs (support or product development). I know, I know, it’s products and services that ultimately make the money. But this is a pragmatic guide. It’s far easier to get more money when you’re bringing it in, compared to when you’re another outgoing.
7. Understand the money if you can’t follow the money: If it’s impossible for you to move into sales or management – you’re a star programmer or a graphic designer, say – then befriend the sales team to discover how your output makes them money. Take an interest in your role in the grand money-making side of things; most of your peers won’t. Use this knowledge to make more money for the company, and parley that into a raise!
8. Be unique: Don’t compare yourself with your colleagues. For a start, it looks like jealousy. More importantly, you’re telling your boss you’re in the same bracket as lazy Rachel or over-paid Bob, even if your point is you’re better. Sorry, that’s just the way our brains work.
9. Anything else they can do for you? Perhaps your company really can’t pay your more money right now. Your research from steps 6 and 7 should tell you if that’s true. Is there some non-monetary benefit that’s of equal value to you personally? Pension contributions, or extra holiday time, working from home time, or maybe a 4-day week provided you deliver? Something will be negotiable.
10. Find out what’s wrong with you: I’ll admit hearing even constructive criticism is the thing I found hardest when I was an employee. But if you’re not getting a raise then you need to ask and be prepared to hear what’s stopping you getting the income you desire. This is after the negotiating phase, so don’t whine or argue back. Listen, learn, fix, out-perform, then go back for more – money, preferably, but failing that more advice until the money eventually follows. Go for it! Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Become a good person who delivers and the money will follow. If you think I’m wrong, then you’re not good enough yet – or your job is beyond saving and you need to move after all!
11. Work Hard, really hard: Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Ecclesiastes 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
Eight Things That Can Boost Your Pay
1.Dress better and lose weight: It is a fact that in many cases and industries thinner and good looking people get paid more money because they give an image of discipline, traits companies value. It is the way of the world, take a car, if it has a great engine but looks awful people will pay less for it than a car that looks better with the same engine, even if it cost less to make. Make yourself visible & noticeable so that when Managers ask themselves who can we get to do…. Your name will be on their tongue.
2.Education: The match between your education and what’s normally required for your job usually affects your pay. Plus, the quality of education can affect salary. Earning a degree from a top program typically has a positive influence on pay, while earning a degree from a school that’s considered weak in a particular field may decrease your earning potential. Update your skills!
3.Performance reviews: Ask for one, every 3 months and as for a copy of them for yourself so you can prove how you have changed/improved.
4. The Boss – your relationship with him or her. The more discretion and latitude you have in relation to your company’s success, the more directly your decisions and actions will affect the bottom line – and your own. And if your boss is higher on the corporate hierarchy, his or her recommendations concerning your pay have less chance to be overridden in the cycles of review. Negotiation tip: in the interview process, find out who the position reports to, along with the position’s potential for growth.
5.Number of reports: The more employees you manage, the higher your pay in certain jobs. Of course, your level of success is also based on the performance of the employees you manage. Negotiation tip: emphasize the successes of those who report to you or who reported to you in your previous position.
6.Professional associations and certifications: Certifications and memberships in professional organizations or trade associations can have a positive effect on pay..
7.Shift differentials: In certain jobs, workers may be expected to perform tasks during less favorable shift times. These employees are typically paid a premium due to the higher social and physical costs involved in working outside “normal work hours.”
8.Hazardous working conditions: In certain jobs, workers are expected to perform tasks under dangerous working conditions. Dangerous working conditions can be defined to include anything from handling dangerous chemicals in a research facility to walking a police beat in a dangerous section of town. Jobs that fall into this category are usually regulated by outside authorities, including labor unions and the government.
9.Become an indispensable expert. Continue to learn about your line of work, so that you stay current with trends and developments. Your strategy might include going to industry conferences, reading industry publications or setting up regular lunch meetings with others in your field to exchange information and ideas. This is a key to increasing your salary. Become an expert in the company’s machinery or computer database.
Point 3: How to excel within your career.
The ultimate way to excel in your salary is keep changing jobs, as when someone want you. i.e employ you, you have bargaining power, they have to give you ….. in order to get you. The opposite of how a company feels about you when you already work for them, they view you in terms of “You are already working for us at $…., so why should I give you more.
1. Always be looking for a job, always, every week, apply for new jobs, there is already a better one out there, better paid etc. Get comfortable with taking risks. Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Do you believe it?
2. Swap between branded companies and small companies. New upcoming companies want to employ from successful branded companies such as Apple, or Disney to bring the successful culture to their new company. But corporate successful companies are looking for people who have experience from outside that which they already know about. The reputation of the companies you work for is as important as the role you perform in them
3. Define and build your reputation in your field of influence. Proverbs 22:1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Every job you leave on bad terms, every person you upset in a job spreads your bad reputation. Every person and company you affect positively goes on to work for another company and spreads your reputation with them. In every industry your reputation goes before you. Mine was “If you lie I will fire you”
4. Build your skill set with setting up your own business in mind. Learn every aspect of a company, how it runs, it will not only make you understand your role better and help you perform with more conviction in your role. It will also make you wise in other people’s minds, which will in turn have people asking you for advice, which in turn builds your positive reputation and influence.
Conclusion: Seven Career Building Sins
1. Impatient… great marketing takes time. Doing it wrong (and rushed) ten times costs much more and takes longer than doing it slowly, but right, over the same period of time.
2. Selfish… Companies have a choice, and if they sense that this is all about you, not them, they will choose someone who is willing to be a “company man”.
3. Jealousy… is someone doing better than you? Of course they are. There’s always someone doing better than you. Your jealousy can destroy a company by making others resentful stopping productivity.
4. Deceitful… If you don’t tell us the truth, it’s probably because you’re selfish. You will not have our interests as a company at heart but yours.
5. Inconsistent… If you do not know what you want out of life and a career it is not their job to tell you , people want to employ people who know what they want and where they are going.
6. Negativity or being angry… at last company, others, us? It’s not something people want in their company. Proverbs 12:14 From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward. I Thessalonians 5:16-19 NIV Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances; this is the will of God for your life: This is the great advantage Christians have, should have.
7. Not Keep up with technology, not changing with the times will kill your career, technology, computers, social media. Proverbs 22:29 Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.
Great careers are attained by those who go after them, your destiny is in your hands
